Available in a choice of different designs and materials bedsteads offer a very flexible choice. They range from solid wood to metal to fully upholstered and come in all standard sizes.
A Divan base is the most simple but most frequently brought type of base due to its simple design and also because the base usually incorporates some combination of storage drawers. There are two styles of Divan Base: Sprung Base, these have springs in the base which give a less firm surface on which to place the mattress. This type of base is recommended for people who prefer a much more forgiving surface on which to sleep. Platform Base, these have a simple board top and give a firmer surface on which to place a mattress.
Metal Bed Frames
From a variety of classic to contemporary designs, these bed frames come in all shapes, sizes and colours including brushed nickel and antique brass.
Mid and high sleepers are just different sizes in height of beds for example a high sleeper is the equivalent of the top bunk of a bunk bed which comes with storage, play space or even a desk area for working underneath. The mid sleeper is in between the size of a high and a normal bed, this type of bed will also usually include some form of storage or play space underneath.
Solid Wood Bed Frames
These bed frames have a natural appearance. With knots, grains and slight variations in colour, no two pieces will look exactly the same - so you'll get something really unique.
This means the bedstead has been finished with leather, fabric, cloth or leather effect material to ensure added comfort and style.
Bed frame sizes are measured by the size of mattress that they fit. For example, a bed frame described as a 4ft 6 (double) bed frame will take a standard UK double mattress (please see below for standard Mattress sizes). Exact dimensions will vary from bed to bed, please check product information or call us if dimensions are not available on the website.
Pocket spring mattresses are adaptations of the traditional open coil and continuous spring, Pocket spring mattresses are made by placing each spring in its own individual pouch/pocket; the spring is not joined to any part of the mattress. The pocket that supports the spring is then joined to other close spring pockets and this creates its own unique feel. By creating the mattress in this way, it allows the springs to move freely and independently, rather than sharing the pressure with surrounding springs. This effect allows for much more accurate outline and feel more comfortable overall.
Memory foam is heat sensitive and can be added to the top layer of a sprung unit for additional support. It is an open cell construction which reacts to heat and weight. The more heat applied, the softer the material gets. This then allows the weight applied to subside more. Memory foam can be made at various densities to result in different tensions/firmnesses. The important design of the Memory foam mattresses is that it softens and moulds to your body shape. This allows for very accurate outline support and weight distribution.
Open spring mattresses are made by using a continuous piece of wire to create to springs, this can then have different gauges of wires for a wider variety of comfort/firmness. Open spring is designed in this way because the springs can be made quickly and efficiently to keep the cost lower for customers. Each open spring coil is then attached at the top and bottom, this gives a spring unit of one. The finishing of this works well due to each coil supporting each other giving a better firmness which will support any weight. This is the same for continuous springs and coil springs.
Hypoallergenic is simply material used in the mattresses that lower the causes of irritation dramatically unlike non-hypoallergenic mattresses do. Although these causes might be lowered there are still some causes of irritation but just reduced greatly. Hypoallergenic mattresses have various ways of being created, mostly by chemicals, but they also have a natural way as to latex and memory foam mattresses are hypoallergenic.
Latex responds to movement, so can help prevent a restless night's sleep and can be added to the top layer of a sprung unit for additional support. Latex is also perfect for use in mattresses due to being so soft, hypoallergenic and natural. It also moulds perfectly to your body shape.
A non-turn mattress does not need to be taken off the bed and turned upside down. It simply needs to be rotated from top to bottom, without having to remove it completely from the bed. This feature is most commonly found on pocket spung mattresses. Manufactures do this by adding a quilted or memory foam layer to one side of the mattress, this also makes it cheaper for customers to buy because it is only needed on one side.
